Local Rebuilding Non-Profit Seeks to Fill AmeriCorps Positions

NEW ORLEANS, LA: March 18, 2008

Student Advocacy for Equitable Recovery (SAFER), a New Orleans-based non-profit group, is currently seeking to hire seven full-time volunteers. These volunteers will sign a contract to work for 1700 hours over the course of ten months, and will receive living stipends and an educational award worth a total of $14,725. Founded by two Tulane University students in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, SAFER is a group that coordinates student volunteers from around the country to rebuild New Orleans homes. SAFER is an officially recognized student organization at Tulane University, and operates from an office on the university campus. The non-profit’s current staff of seven full-time volunteers has led over 1,500 individual volunteers in recovery efforts throughout New Orleans, clearing flood debris from over 90 homes and rebuilding 15 additional homes.
